Tripura News: Hail storm causes widespread damage in Kailashahar

A sudden and severe storm accompanied by hail struck Kailashahar in Tripura at around 3 am on the intervening nights of Friday and Saturday, wreaking havoc and causing extensive damage to both property and livelihoods. The storm affected several wards of the Kailashahar Municipal Council area, including Durgapur, Uttar Kacherghat, and Forest Office Road.

The storm caused significant damage to houses and businesses in the affected areas. Some homes had roofs completely blown off, while others were left with damaged walls and windows. Businesses were also not spared, with many suffering broken windows, damaged roofs, and destroyed inventory.

Storm-in-Kailashahar-TripuraOne of the worst-affected persons was Prasenjit Das, a clay artisan who lost nearly Rs 2 to 3 lakh worth of idols and inventory when two large trees fell on his shop during the storm. Das, who relies on his idol making business to support his family, is now facing an uncertain future.

Another clay artisan Subrata Rudrapal of Srirampur area in Kailashahar said that his shop was also badly damaged, with the roof collapsing and causing damage to numerous sculptures. The storm also caused damage to a grocery store opposite the fire station, with the owner, Mitu Das, estimating losses of around Rs 70,000.

The Chairperson of the Kailashahar Municipal Council, Chapla Debroy, visited the affected areas this morning to assess the damage. She said that the storm had caused widespread damage to electricity poles, roofs, and trees. Debroy said that she would be meeting with district officials to discuss relief measures for the affected residents and businesses.

Debroy urged the government to provide immediate assistance to the affected families and businesses. She said that many people had lost their homes and livelihoods and were in need of financial help to rebuild their lives.
