J&K Assembly today witnessed melee over beef issue. News agencies reports, some of the BJP legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly thrashed today Independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid for throwing a beef party in Srinagar on Oct 7. The clash triggered an uproar from Opposition which staged a walkout.
Incidentally, J&K Assembly was scheduled to take up a Bill on the ban on the meat. Thus the thrashing of the MLA bears significance. Protesting against the thrashing, Opposition Parties staged a walkout. As BJP MLAs was assaulting Rashid, several NC and Congress MLAs rushed to save the victim.
According to political analysts, beef issue is becoming a major controversial issue that may fuel communal tension in vulnerable areas. After Dadri lynching, thrashing of Rashid may create communal disturbances which will surely jeopardize country’s economic progress.
