After arrests of three persons with firearms in Sabroom recently, this was the second such incident. “With ganja and drug mafias – for the first time – are in tight spot and smuggling across the border is also becoming difficult after BJP-led Government assumed power in Tripura, in-flow of deadly weapons is emerging as a major concern”, informed sources said.

According to available information, value of today’s seized firearms stands at around Rs 6-7 lakh.

After getting information from secret sources, North District SP Bhanu Pada Chakraborty alerted the Dharmanagar Police and a team led by the SDPO of Dharmanagar Jyotisman Das Choudhury and OC Benu Madhab Deb launched a manhunt at hotels near Dharmanagar rail station on Tuesday late night and ultimately succeeded in nabbing Pranjit Das from a Guest House near Kalibari temple in Dharmanagar Office tila area.

Preliminary information revealed that Pranjit – hails from Debipur of Bishalgarh sub-division -was travelling Silchar to Agartala and took possession of firearms after reaching at Badarpur. As he could not find any Agartala bound vehicle at night, he stayed at a hotel.

Sources said, “Pranjit is yet to divulge details to Police  – especially motive behind procuring firearms”. Police lodged a case under Arms Act against Pranjit, Police sources said.

In recent past, Police arrested three persons with firearms at Southern most part of the State – Sabroom, and in that case, firearms were country made. However, from Pranjit, Police recovered three foreign made Pistols of different sizes.
