Tripura CM meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on September 20, 2018

September 20, 2018: In a meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Deb today detailed about State Government’s actions and achievements against narcotics dealers.

According to a press communiqué, Deb said, “huge quantities of cannabis – more that 45,000 kg were seized till September 19 last. Further, more than 88,000 numbers of Cough syrup bottles, more than 1.48 lakh Tablets and more than 2500 kg Heroin were seized. Police destroyed more than 1.69 crore numbers of Ganja seedlings till September 19, 2018”.       

After the new BJP-led Government wrested power in Tripura from Leftists in March last, Chief Minister Biplab Deb made a clarion call to end the drug menace in the State and make Tripura an ‘addiction free’ State.

Biplab Deb also briefed Prime Minister about the State Government’s plan to create other livelihood options so that people shift away ganja cultivation.

In a press communiqué he said, “The State Government has started promoting alternate sources of livelihood in the areas under Cannabis cultivation with the assistance from Forest, Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry Departments”.

Development of these sectors will not only create livelihood options for people living in areas under ganja cultivation, but also growth on priority basis in Agri-horti and Fisheries sector will prevent an outflow of Rs 5000 crore annually from the State.

“Prime Minister lauded the efforts of   Chief Minister, Tripura in this regard and assured full support of the Central Government to the `NASHA MUKT TRIPURA’ campaign”, said a press communiqué.
