Cyclone Remal Intensifies: Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Tripura, other NE States

Cyclone Remal is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to develop into a severe cyclonic storm within the next 24 hours. Tripura and other Northeast states are likely to heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Cyclone Remal could make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh by midnight on Sunday. 

Cyclone-Remal-advisory-tripuraWind speeds could reach 100-120 kilometers per hour when the cyclone makes landfall. Squally winds with speeds up to 70 kilometers per hour could sweep over Mizoram and Tripura during this time.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in some parts of Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26 and 27.

In view of the impeding storm, the Government of Tripura issued advisories to the District Magistrates and Collectors and requested to follow the impact-based advisories of IMD and take up measures looking at the current situation.

The advisory suggested to assess the situation regularly, alert NDRF/SDRF/TSR/Fire & ES /Trained Volunteers and QRTs and identify the locations where to respond. If needed standby them and press them to action immediately.  

To keep ready the equipment like boats, life jackets and other flood rescue items. 

To monitor river flows, embankments and catchment areas and take immediate preventive and preparedness measures. 

To evacuate people from low lying areas to the safe shelters and start providing relief if needed. 

To start operating pumps in inundated areas to extract flood water. To make immediate damage assessment and report to SEOC along with information of action taken. 

To keep Response teams/ line depts ready to take immediate action for removing debris and restoring essential services. To Depute officers / key officials for specific response. Need based response to be taken up immediately as per disaster management plan.

Meantime, the Local IMD said, the weather in Agartala will be partly cloudy tomorrow. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is possible in one or two places. The maximum temperature will be around 36 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be around 28 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature today was 37.2 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature was 26 degrees Celsius. Scattered rain with thunderstorms is possible in all districts of the state in the next 24 hours.
