BJP office set afire, tension at TTAADC headquarters

Ally of Ruling saffron Party, IPFT activists allegedly set ablaze a newly constructed BJP Party office at Khunulwng near Agartala in West Tripura Distrcit today. However, timely intervention of civil and Police administration did not let the situation to spill out of hand.

Even as the uncertainty is looming over possible date for Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, desperation of the regional political parties, specifically, IPFT to wrest power in the ensuing polls using ‘no-holds-barred’ manner becomes palpable.

The aggressive political overtures and even violent clashes - this time chaos and clashes between the two ruling partners BJP and IPFT, are being reported with regular intervals.

In the latest incident on today once again tension prevailed between BJP and IPFT, centering inauguration of a new BJP party office at Khumulwng. The IPFT activists actually burnt down a newly constructed BJP office triggering huge tension in the ADC headquarters areas.

Apart from setting the BJP office aflame at Khumulwng’s old degree college area other relevant arrangements, such as makeshift stages, poles for flag hoisting etc. were also vandalized in broad daylight.

Sources said that the attack was launched to foil a big joining programme of the BJP, which was scheduled to take place tomorrow. It was expected that a huge number of IPFT workers would join the BJP in the programme.

The situation immediately turned volatile as the BJP activists also got readied and started gathering to retaliate. In the meantime, the IPFT workers were also not sitting idle and began arriving on the spot in hundreds. It had been also reported that for a certain period supporters of both the parties laid siege surrounding the area and no one was allowed to enter.

It was the police, fire tenders vehicles that were allowed to enter, and the tension reduced henceforth. However, timely police and administrative actions brought the situation under control before it snowballed like previous occasions. But there were still simmering tension.

BJP spokesperson, Nabendu Bhattacharjee said, “Our party office has been attacked by politically motivated miscreants. We have urged our party workers to stay calm and wait for the police action. The police are also informed by us to take necessary action against the people involved in such activities”.

However, no one from the IPFT could be contacted to comment on the issue even after repeated attempts. Some calls remained unanswered whereas some phones were kept in switched off mode.
